How measurement and calibration law affects EV charging infrastructure

A white paper based on the legal situation in Germany (also known as "Eichrecht")

Are you manufacturing charging stations, managing charging stations via your IT backend as a charge point operator, or providing end customer contracts as an e-mobility service provider? If you answered ‘yes’ to at least one of these questions and you plan to provide your product or service in Germany, then the white paper shown below is for you.

This white paper addresses the existing calibration law regulations (“Eichrecht” in German) and ways to facilitate a transparent and tamper-proof billing process. Germany is one of the first countries across the globe to enforce calibration law regulations for EV charging infrastructure. We assume that similar regulations and requirements will also be introduced in other countries of the European Union and maybe even beyond along with an increasing market penetration of EVs.

The white paper covers the following subject matter:

The legal framework related to charging infrastructure and the billing of electric energy is still early and may continue to evolve with time and use cases. Over time, an ever-growing list of companies will introduce products and services to the market that comply with the legal stipulations described in this white paper. Many countries in Europe and worldwide may soon adopt this legal framework or make country-specific adjustments.

We plan to keep this document up-to-date and would appreciate your input to achieve this goal. Please don’t hesitate to contact us and let us know of any insights you may have on this matter.
